Famous Supreme Court Cases
Many people believe that the decisions made in the Supreme court have little or no effect on them; this is simply not true. Below are listed the results of multiple cases that directly effect many Americans. Marbury v Madison
1803 case. Supreme Court first asserted its right to determine the meaning of the U.S. Constitutuion; this established the power of the court to determine whether acts of the legislative and the executive branch were constitutional.
Bush v. Gore
2000 case. Supreme Court resolved the dispte over the 2000 election between Bush and Gore. This decided the election in Bush's favor.
Santa Fe Independent School District v. Jane Doe
2000 case. Court ruled that prayer could be held in schools as long as the scool officials are not involved in instigating the prayer.
West Side Community Schools v. Mergens
1990 case. Public schools that allow student-interest clubs and extra-curricular activity groups cannot exclude religous or political groups.
New Jersey v. T.L.O.
1985 case. Schools are allowed to search student belongings if there is reasonable suspiscion that a rule has been broken or that a student has comitted a crime.
Vernonia School District v. Acton
1995 case. Schools are allowed to require drug testing for extra-curricular activities.
Ingraham v. Wright
1977 case. Teachers are allowed to use corporal punishment as long as it is allowed by local and state government organizations.
Kent v. United States
1966 case. Teenagers are allowed to be tried as adults for certain crimes; murder, sexual assault, drug use/sale. This means they are tried and sentenced as adults.
Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District
1969 case.Students and teachers have the right to express themselves at schools and public places up to a point. As long as it does not cause any disruption or threatens the safety and/or order of a school or students.
Hazlewood School District v. Kuhlmeier
1988 case. This ruling gave schools the ability to censor student run newspapers.
Grutter v. Bollinger
2003 case. This case allowed colleges to use race as a factor in the admissions process.
DeShaney v. Winnebago County Social Services
1989 case. Ruled that the constitution does not protect kids from there parents in cases of abuse, despite this many states still enforce laws to intervene in cases of abuse and mistreatment.
