The Presidency
- The most visible part of the executive branch is the presidency.
- Must be atleast 35 years old
- Must have been a permanent resident of the United States for atleast the last fourteen years
- Must have been born in the United States
- 4-year term (Only allowed to be elected to two terms, after the 22nd amendment was passed)
- Pay: $400,000 per year (as well as $50,000 annual expense account, $100,000 annual travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment)
Roles of the President
- National Security Powers: Serves as commander in chief of the armed forces. Make treaties with other nations (with 2/3 Senate approval). Nominate ambassadors (with majority senate approval). Receive ambassadors of other nations and recognize other governments.
- Legislative Powers: Present the State of the Union to Congress. recommend legislation to congress. Convene both houses of Congress on extraordinary occasions. Veto legislation, can be overridden by a 2/3 vote in each house.) Adjourn congress if neither the House or Senate can agree on adjournment.
- Administrative Powers: "Take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Nominate officials with agreement of the Senate. Request written opinions of administrative officials. Fill administrative vacancies during congressional recesses.
- Judicial Powers: Grant reprieves and pardons for federal offenses. Nominate federal judges, who must be confirmed by a majority of the Senate.
